"Digital Cultural Heritage - Essential for Tourism"

EVA Vienna

Workshop on Cultural Archives for Virtual Tourists

Sunday, 27 th August 2006

Outline of the workshop

In this Workshop, both theoretically and technically (by concrete examples), the Center for Image Science presents options on how to make cultural heritage virtually accessible (e.g. the graphic collection of the Monastery Goettweig, note archives of the Krenek-institute or the documentation of international media art works: www.virtualart.at).

Beyond that is to be outlined, how visitors on web pages of cultural heritage behave, which tools there are for the assessment and evaluation of User-Behaviour and how cultural institutions can convert “virtual tourists” of such sites to frequent users.

Duration 10.30 – 12.15

Motivation

The Center for Image Science (CIS) of Danube University Krems offers all professions, which deal with images a wide theoretical and practical review about historic and latest forms of images and image techniques – from engravings to augmented reality, from the laterna magica to the visual world at the nanoscale or telematic installations. Two database projects at the Center facilitate its activities: the Database of Virtual Art and a database, which focused on a historical engraving collection. In addition to the new subjects: media art, images of the sciences, image and emotion and exhibition design/-management (all of them as of 2006), the principal task of the CIS is the continuing education of specialists in the professional collecting, conserving, making accessible and presentation of images and image collections. The Europe-wide unique postgraduate courses „Image Management“ and „Image Studies (Master of Arts)” as well as a number of specialized Certified Programs combines the scientific fields of image theory, image analysis and digital collection management. Besides, the Center offers consulting services for cultural institutions and companies, which want to establish digital database systems.

The experiences of staff members of the Center for Image Science as well as results from international undertakes and reports underline the necessity to focus the attention primarily on the future users of the web-projects. This focal point will be the main issue to be discussed in this workshop.
