Preliminary Programme online!

Over the last few years, we have seen an explosion in the amount of image and video data available to us over the Internet. The number of images indexed by search engines is growing exponentially, and has currently reached several billions. But the revolution is not only technological; it is also cultural, giving rise to the phenomenon popularly referred to as Web 2.0. Part of this phenomenon is the popularity of digital communities. Users are enabled to generate and publish their own content and are so uploading, tagging, and sharing images and videos with millions of other users.

The emergence of these image and video data on the web is a great opportunity for computer vision to start looking globally - at the scale of the entire planet. Social networks, community driven databases and multiply user indexed media seem to change the way we look at high-level computer vision tasks. Is this wealth of available information revolutionizing computer vision? Several tasks take great advantage of the web as a data source. But does the global community solve former computer vision tasks on its own?
On the other hand computer vision research is asked to support people to navigate the chaotic sea of visual information. Is computer vision able to play a significant role in these needs?

OEAGM 2010 is dedicated to the topic of Computer Vision in a Global Society to give some answers to these urgent questions.
