The spatial information content is very complex and of hierarchical nature depending on levels of scale and abstraction. We use graph pyramids (hierarchies of plane graphs) for storing and retrieving the geographical information. Equivalent data structures are combinatorial maps or bases of matroids.
The interaction with the potential user (Geographers, Landscape Ecologists) is supported by an appropriate visualization of the geographical information. Exemplary maps display artificial landscapes enabling the verification of definitions and rules, but may also suggest landscape structures for renaturation tasks (e.g. renaturation of quarries or construction sites of power plants).
