Image Compression Based on Laplacian Pyramids

The building of a Laplacian pyramid is described and demonstrated. Afterwards, multiresolution splines of two images are explained and demonstrated. Finally, for basic fovea a rudimentary fovea is formed within the Laplacian pyramid and shown in an animated demonstration.

Laplacian Pyramids

A Laplacian pyramid can be obtained by subtracting each Gaussian pyramid level from the next lower level in the sequence. The levels differ in density.

Multiresolution Splines

This demonstration splines two images A and B using the following steps:

  • Step 1: Laplacian pyramids LA and LB are constructed for images A and B
  • Step 2: A third Laplacian pyramid LS is constructed (2N-1 denotes the center line):
  • Step 3: The splined image S is obtained by expanding and summing the levels of LS
