SSIP 2008
16th Summer School on Image Processing, 7th - 16th July
SSIP is an annual Summer School set up for graduate students with research interests in Image Processing.
This year the SSIP takes place in the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria. The Summer School consists of
daily lectures, on a whole range of Image Processing topics, given by world experts in the field. In
addition, the students are divided into groups and given an Image Processing project to work on during
the afternoons.
The Project
Our group was given the challenging task of creating a machine vision system that:
- Uses a webcam to read the current state of a boardgame.
- Feeds the current board state into a game playing engine.
- Retrieves a suggestion for the next move.
This system could either act as an advisor to the player or as a computer opponent.
We decided
to use the game of Checkers (also known as Draughts) as it is very popular around the world and there are many playing engines available on the
web. For those of you who are not entirely familiar with the game, the complete set of rules can be
found
here
