Andreas Ritzberger: Digitalization of Picture Frames

This practicum was about finding a way to digitize picture frame ledges for three dimensional visualization and measurement. One reason to work with picture frames was their richness in different surfaces, colors and styles and therefore the challenge of finding a suitable “one fits all” solution for digitalization. The other reason was a lack of automation in traditional picture frame shops which could benefit from three dimensional visualization when it comes to finding the proper picture frame for customers.

Thus a technique was developed, that overcomes the limitations of laser scanners which lie in maximum resolution and maximum object size. The method developed for this practicum extrudes the ledge from a picture of its profile while being accurate enough to measure its dimensions. Further a line simplification algorithm was developed to reduce irregularities in the digitalized ledge that occur due to damages done to the profile by cutting it.

Since the surfaces of picture frame ledges can be irregular, pictures of the whole ledge are used for texturing to avoid introducing a discrepancy between the original ledge and its digitalized representation. Because Ledges are between 250cm and 300cm long, a scanner normally used for art digitalization is utilized to take these pictures.

To determine the success of the practicum the method is evaluated in terms of accuracy of the measurements, the estimated required time for digitalizing 3000 ledges (average number of ledges available in specialist shops) and the automation degree of the method.
