Irregular pyramids are used as a representation of hierarchical image segmentations, usually created by a region merging algorithm. In contrast to other representations irregular pyramids can store information about the topology of regions (e.g. holes in an object are represented as self loops, where another region is inside). The resulting segmentations are affected by the order in which the regions are merged. This order is influenced by determining the similarity of the regions, based on certain features. This project focuses on the extension of an existing implementation, which uses the color contrast between regions as similarity measure and the evaluation of the new program. This extension includes a reduction of the memory consumption of the pyramid and the integration of other features (other similarity measures).
