"Digital Cultural Heritage - Essential for Tourism"

EVA Vienna

Workshop on IT and Cultural Tourism

This workshop intends to explore the technical options of using advanced concepts and systems of digital imaging and video telephony (UMTS/3G) for establishing modes of cultural tele-presence. More specifically, the workshop will discuss the role of both pre-recorded and live video/multimedia information about cultural content and events in the future development of digitally accessible cultural heritage and its marketing in the tourism and leisure industry as part of a strategy to generate additional revenue helping to maintain this cultural heritage and make it “remotely” available to a world-wide community of interested users, consumers, and admirers over wireless telecommunication networks.

To provide a sound basis for workshop discussions, the event will start with a couple of introductory statements from both technology and application sides, so that an overview of the current state of development and available implementation scenarios is established first. These introductory statements about imaging, visualization, and video communication will focus on original content (cultural values to be digitised), methods of digital preservation providing the source of electronic content to be distributed, and available tools of video-telephony to actually convey content to tourists and spectators.

Goals and results of an ongoing Austrian-Slovakian innovation project concerning live video access to remote sites by video cellular phones will be presented as additional input to the development of application scenarios for effectively utilising advanced video-telephony in a cultural context.

The workshop will sketch a couple of possible application scenarios (such as the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage of the Schönbrunn Palace and – especially – Gardens), through work groups moderated by the workshop presenters, emphasising the live access to digital cultural content to be summarised in a final workshop synopsis.

The workshop will conclude with a joint excursion to the site of Schönbrunn Palace as a farewell get2gether of EVA 2006 in Vienna.
